Activists know change can only happen when you dare to do things differently. Strong-minded and courageous, activists can achieve anything they set their mind to. Activists are sensitive to injustice and don’t accept how things simply are. They should and can be better! Although some may think they are cynical – great activists turn their dissatisfaction into the fire they need to act.
Activists create change from the bottom up. By stepping up and speaking out about an issue, they show the rest of us that the impossible becomes possible against all odds. Great activists make us believe that there is an alternative – pathing the way for other citizens to fight for a cause, changing the status-quo and eventually creating long-lasting societal change (although this may take years or generations).
Activists are determined and courageous – but they also learned that standing out is a good thing – not everyone has to like you. They are sharp and memorable communicators, and are able to demand attention through either stunts or spoken word. We think of activists of fighting mostly in the streets, but they fight for their ideals in every space – within schools, offices, sports clubs. You can choose to be one too.
Some successful activists have propelled global movements, others achieve a single policy change, still others expose crimes. No wonder young activists all around the world are both celebrated and feared.
Start by standing up for something
Activism is a choice. Next time you experience something goes against your values: stand up and say something about it.
In the words of famous activists
I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic… and act as if the house was on fireGreta Thunberg
